What is the LKRT?

The Little Kanawha River Trail is a wonderful recreational destination!. The water trail runs through Braxton, Gilmer and Calhoun counties and has been developed for non-motorized boaters allowing users to enjoy the natural, historic, cultural and scenic resources of the Kanawha watershed. Please join us for a LKRT Float or Clean Up, or plan your own trip using our multiple river access sites indicated on the map and have a great experience in the heart of West Virginia!

Things to Do

Kayak and Canoeing

169 Miles of mostly calm, flat water with mild rapids making it a fantastic journey for adventurists of all levels. Fed by the Burnsville Lake, the Little Kanawha River features calm flat water with small rapids dotted along the way. After the Burnsville Dam, the river flows through the counties of Braxton, Gilmer, Calhoun, Wirt and Wood Counties, past the communities of Burnsville, Stouts Mills, Sand Fork, Glenville, Grantsville, Bigbend, Creston, Burning Springs, Palestine, Elizabeth, and Newark, to its mouth at the Ohio River in Parkersburg.

Fishing

Stretching through West Virginia's lush landscapes, the trail provides access to prime fishing spots teeming with species like smallmouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. Whether casting from the shore or a kayak, anglers can enjoy a tranquil experience surrounded by nature. Efforts to enhance accessibility along the trail have created numerous entry points, making it easy for both seasoned fishers and beginners to explore this thriving waterway.

Clean Up Days

We love our waterways and encourage all to help in keeping them clean and beautiful. Our cleanup days are great for community groups, organizations and families to promote environmental awareness.
